Science has been ignoring in India and also around the world and hence the researchers and teachers are protesting on the streets because there are no funds raised for the subject of science. Several marches were held in Indian and also the world where scientists have demanded more funds for the field.
The funds are being demanded so that the researchers can do better research and use better products to get the results.
In Mumbai, people marched from Worli to Haji Ali holding the banners that said, “Defend Science, Don’t De-fund Science”. They demand the government to increase the fund for the science research.
The event is known as ‘MarchForScience’, this was an event that was started a year ago, globally by the scientist to promote the inclusion of evidence-based science in public policies.
The faculty of various institutions like TISS, IIT, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research participated in this march.
The research and development department, demanded the government to increase the expenditure on the Research and Development Department to at least 3% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). They also said that at least 10% of GDP should be spent on the Education Department.
“India has a bad performance with its expenditure on research and development, less than 1% of its GDP. Places such as South Korea, China spend close to 3%. This essentially shows lack of interest from the government in science,” MC Arunan, who heads the Collaborative Undergraduate Biology Education at Homi Bhabha Research Center spoke with HT.
