Om Puri Condemns Pakistan Artist Ban, Insults Uri Martyrs although unintentionally

According to a TOI report, in a recent live TV channel debate, actor Om Puri, while trying to defend art ended up insulting Indian martyrs. Yes, he actually did.

Bollywood is divided in their opinions. On one hand, we have Salman Khan who believes in supporting talent and on the other, we have singer Abhijeet who is questioning everyone who is not in support of the ban.

While we as laymen are coming to terms with the entire situation, another opinion of a veteran Bollywood actor has surfaced, and to say that it’s kind of surprising would be an understatement.

During the show, talking about Indian soldiers, he said, “Who had asked the soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick the weapons?”

But he didn’t stop at that. He went on to say, “Do you want India-Pakistan enmity to turn like Israel and Palestine, and fight for ages? India is home to crores of Muslims, there is no point in proving them for war. Several Indians have their relatives staying across the border and vice-versa, how can they fight a war with their cross-border families”.

Right after the show was aired, the internet couldn’t help but criticise him for his regressive and harsh opinions about the national concern of security and the people who are serving our country.

He made a valid point about keeping art and politics separate and that banning artists won’t change the situation. He further added that Pakistani actors are not brought illegally to India but have a legit work visa, and therefore the film industry shouldn’t suffer. While we can totally understand his point of view, his statements about the country’s soldiers have left many appalled. According to the TOI story, #OmPuri was trending on Twitter with hundreds of online netizens blasting the veteran actor for his statements.
