Ram Nath or Meira Kumar- Who will be India’s next President? Check Live updates

The two major candidates- Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar are today standing face-off to fight for the Presidential position of India. The votes of 776 MPs and 4120 MLAs will decide the same, the polling of which has already begun.

Although, it is speculated that Bihar’s Governer Ram Nath is likely to sweep the election with 70 per cent of the electoral college backing him. But, opposition Meira, former Lok Sabha speaker is leaving no stone unturned to get votes in her basket.

On sunday, Meira met Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal at his residence to seek support of Aam Aadmi Party.

The clash between both the candidates is huge as two Dalit leaders are said to have an ‘ideological battle’ today. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said it to be “a clash of ideas and a conflict of disparate values”.

The Election Commission on Sunday said that MPs and MLAs will not be allowed to carry their personal pens inside the voting chamber who arrive to cast a vote for president. The decision has been taken after the ink controversy in Rajya Sabha polls in Haryana last year. Special serial-numbered pens with violet ink have been supplied by the Election Commission.

MLAs queue up at Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly to cast their votes.

In the assembly today, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, said that Ram Nath Kovind is certain to win. “The polls to decide the next President has started. There is no doubt that Ram Nath Kovind will win.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with BJP President Amit Shah too cast their votes at the Parliament. Modi while addressing the media said, “Today the Monsoon Session begins. Like the Monsoon brings hope, this session also brings same spirit of hope. This session gives the country an opportunity to elect the president and the vice president.”

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said to ANI, “Ram Nath Kovind ji will win with a comfortable & respectable margin.”

On sunday, PM modi had met Kovind and congratulated him in advance. He also assured him that he will get full support from his government.

Andhra Pradesh CM N.Chandrababu Naidu cast his vote for in Amaravati.

However, we might witness some cross-voting from Samajwadi Party due to tensions between Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh. Mulayam had recently appreciated BJP’s choice on picking Kovind. He had also attended a dinner organised by Yogi Adityanath to honour of Narendra Modi during his Lucknow visit on June 20, which Akhilesh Yadav had skipped.

In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a hawan is being performed in support of BJP, where people are praying for the victory of Ram Nath.

In the mean time, Rehearsals are taking place for the swearing-in ceremony of the new President at Delhi’s Vijay Chowk.

It is reported that BJP might announce its vice-presidential candidate today, later in the evening. However, the opposition has already selected former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as its vice-presidential candidate.

In the meantime, Mayawati doesn’t care as to who will win as the President will be from Scheduled Caste, which is a victory in itself.
