Eight Asiatic lions at Hyderabad zoo test positive for COVID-19

Eight Asiatic lions at Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park have tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first case of lions or any other animals tested positive in an Indian zoo.

Hyderabad based Centre for cellular and molecular biology (CCMB) tested samples of four male and four female lions on 19th April after they showed COVID-19 symptoms including fever. The RT-PCR tests have not yet came in but as per a source CCMB orally told NZP that the tests were positive.

Dr. Rakesh Mishra, the CCMB director has said the the lions are recovering well and eating properly and the CCMB have shared the SOPs with the zoo which they are asked to follow. The zoo will send the Samples of the animals to CCMB from time to time for frequent checkups. According to Dr. Mishra the animals got infected through zoo-keeping staff. He also said that the method to test the samples of the animals faeces is developing and this method would be very useful in future because it is not possible everytime to collect the saliva from wild animals.
