The award is being given to Ravish Kumar for his moral courage that he showed for standing up for the truth, independence and integrity. Kumar also believes in the principle of giving full and respectful voice for those who are voiceless.

Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for Ravish Kumar and users could not hide their emotions and excitement over hearing the news. Myanmar-based journalist Ko Swe Win, Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab from Philippines, Angkhana Neelapaijit from Thailand, and Kim Jong Ki from South Korea were the other recipients of this prestigious prize.
Ko Swe Win works as the chief edition the Myanmar Now news agency and his works were mainly towards human rights cases, which include death, physical injury, unlawful detention etc.

Angkhana Neelapaijit is the wife of the disappeared human rights lawyer and she is described as a one of the leading defender of human rights in southern Thailand.
Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab is a musical leader from Philippines and has contributed a lot in his role as a composer, arranger, conductor, music director, performer, and educator. South Korean Kim Jong Ki is considered as a great agrarian movement leader and a Christian philosopher who has given a great amount of leadership towards the cultivation of wastelands.

Ravish Kumar has also been awarded with Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award for the Best Journalist of the Year earlier. Ravish has become the fifth Indian journalist to win the Ramon Magsaysay Award. He is also the author of the famous book, “The Free Voice – On Democracy, Culture and The Nation”.
Married to Nayana Dasgupta, Ravish Kumar has a daughter who is a teacher at the Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi and teaches history.
