Justice Shahrukh Kathawalla hears cases till 3.30 am to clear pending cases

As per latest reports, Justice Shahrukh Kathawalla, a Bombay High Court Judge, made sure that each and every case listed on his board got cleared before leaving home, even if that destined working till the late hours of Friday.

Justice Shahrukh Kathawalla wanted the pending cases to get cleared on the last day of court before summer break begins. With this, he set a new record in the books of High Court.

Justice Shahrukh J Kathawalla reined a crammed courtroom till 3.30 am, hearing cases and taking decisions on pleas.

A senior counsel, who was there in the court till the judge rose from his seat, stated. “The courtroom was packed with senior counsels, lawyers, and litigants, whose matters were being heard. There were over 100 civil petitions that had sought urgent interim reliefs.”

Even at 3:30 a.m., the judge’s level of energy was the same as in the morning and he worked without exhaustion on his face.

Previously, Justice Khatawalla had become the star for sitting in court until late hours. Two weeks back, he had taken up cases in his chamber till midnight.

As per reports, Justice Kathawalla frequently starts his work at 10 am, an hour before than the other judges, and hears the cases after 5 pm, when the court closes for the day.

His colleague stated that in spite of hearing the issues till so late, he returned to his courtroom this morning to conclude pending work.

Advocate Mayur Khandeparkar, who was there in the court till the time 3.30 am as his case turned up at 3.15 am stated, “I remember him starting work at 11 in the morning and taking a break at 2.40 pm for lunch. However, when he started working again at 3.10 pm, he only got up by 3.30 am. I have never seen any judge work till this late in my entire career.”

Khandeparkar further stated that the judge was hearing petitions that required insistent interim bails.

Khandeparkar also stated, “He wasn’t just adjourning the matters but hearing out each case and giving the right solution.”

“It would have been very boring if some judge was trying to sit back just to adjourn the matters, but Justice Kathawalla was very patient while hearing each matter. The efforts made by the judge are commendable,” added Khandeparkar.
