Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has returned home to India owing to a family emergency. Kohli, who was in South Africa as part of India’s Test squad, will miss the ongoing three-day practice match in Pretoria in order to fly back.

However, the batsman is expected to rejoin his teammates in South Africa prior to the first Test match against the Proteas, scheduled to begin on December 26.

In addition to Kohli’s departure, India have also lost opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for the upcoming two-Test series. Gaikwad sustained a finger fracture during the second ODI against South Africa earlier this week. The young batter has not fully recovered from the injury and has been ruled out.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to name a replacement for Gaikwad. Meanwhile, Kohli is anticipated to be back with the team for the all-important first Test as India look to win their maiden series in South Africa.
