The Kashmir valley is still resenting the abrogation of Article 370 that gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir but in Ladakh, the scene is totally different.

Ladakh has become a Union Territory without a legislative assembly with Monday’s amendment, just like Jammu and Kashmir but the difference is J&K has a legislative assembly.

For the people of Ladakh it is a long-standing dream come true, that is to have its own identity.

The prominent politicians from both the BJP and Congress cutting across the party lines, joined Leh residents to welcome the decision, a long-pending demand of the region’s people.

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, the BJP Lok Sabha member from the constituency said – “Today is a historic day for the people of Ladakh which always faced discrimination and step-motherly treatment from successive governments in the past in funding shares and employment”.

While expressing happiness on the decision, he said the region of Ladakh is not just a piece of land but is a sensitive border area which has strategic importance.

The people of Ladakh says that they had always been overshadowed by Kashmir when it comes to development and allocation of resources.

Ladakh, in fact, had a long history of its struggle to come out from the Kashmiri identity and to have identity of its own.

At one side, where the celebrations are taking place in Leh after Ladakh was declared a UT on Monday, it has not been received well by a section of people in the Kargil region.

Asgar Ali Karbalai, the Congress rebel leader and former MLA called it a black day not only for J&K but for the whole nation. He said they are against the division of J&K based on religion, language, and region. He also added that the people of Kargil are against the decision and will launch a massive agitation against it.
