Meet Mr. Azim Hashim Premji, the second richest man in India who pledged to give away half of his assets to the needy

Today we are going to talk about the second richest man in India, Azim Hashim Premji.  Azim Hashim is a business tycoon and a philanthropist.  He heads the Wipro Limited as a sitting Chairman.  He was born on 24 July 1945 in Mumbai.  He is called as Czar of the Indian IT Industry.  He has his footing into IT industry since four decades and is the driving force behind the success of Wipro.

He was listed by many top magazines as most influential person in the world.  It is estimated that he has assets worth of US$15.6 billion as of October 2018.   He started a foundation named Azim Premji Foundation that aims at educating students belonging to rural areas.  He took a pledge to give away half of his wealth to the needy.

All of thhis started with Premji’s father Muhammed Hashim who started Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd.  The company used to manufacture cooking oil named Sunflower Vanaspati.  Azim went to abraod to study Stanford University and on hearing the news of his father’s death he returned to his home at the age of 21.  Along with taking care of the company he started manufacturing new products like bakery fats, ethnic based toiletries, hair care soaps, baby toiletries etc.

Azim Premji personal and professional life

The young entrepreneur recognized the emerging boom of the IT industry and stepped into IT field and took charge of Wipro.  He started manufacturing minicomputers in collaboration with an American company Sentinel Computer Corporation.

Coming to his personal life, he belongs to a Muslim family.  His father is a named businessman and his mother is an children orthopedic doctor.  He did Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Stanford University, USA.  He is married to Yasmeen and had two children, Rishad and Tariq. Rishad is currently helming the post of Chief Strategy Officer of Wipro.

In 2005, the Government of India honoured him with the title of Padma Bhushan for his outstanding work in trade and commerce and in 2011, he has been awarded Padma Vibhushan.

Talking about his giving away pledge, he said, “I strongly believe that those of us, who are privileged to have wealth, should contribute significantly to try and create a better world for the millions who are far less privileged”— Azim Premji.
