The iPhone users or those who are planning to buy it might not be pleased to know that the services of iPhone users in India might get deactivated in the near future. India’s telecom regulator (TRAI) on Thursday, presented a new rulebook which will further intensify its ongoing battle with Apple. If the rules are enforced, the services of iPhone users in our country will be terminated.

TRAI “proposed to curb the problem of unsolicited commercial communication”.

TRAI has an app on the Google Play store that allows the users to register for ‘Do Not Disturb’. It helps the users to avoid the unwanted calls and texts that spam them on daily basis. The users can also report the spam calls and texts that violates the DND flag. Similar to this, TRAI wants to launch a similar app in Apple phones but the company does not allow third-party apps to access their calling and messaging interface. This has led to a battle between Apple and TRAI.

The TRAI regulation reads,

“Every Access Provider shall ensure, within six months’ time, that all smartphone devices registered on its network support the permissions required for the functioning of such Apps as prescribed in the regulations 6(2)(e) and regulations 23(2)(d).

Provided that where such devices do not permit functioning of such Apps as prescribed in regulations 6(2)(e) and regulations 23(2)(d), Access Providers shall, on the order or direction of the Authority, derecognize such devices from their telecom networks.”

These regulations stated above relates to different ways by which users can make changes in their communication settings and also gives them the right and option to report it if an entity violates it.

iOS 12, the upcoming version of Apple’s operating system is set to bring an option to report spam calls and texts in order to meet the requirements set up TRAI. However, TRAI is not happy with the provisions of iOS 12 and wants to integrate an app in iPhones right away.
